Amateur radio licensing

The FCC issues three amateur radio license classes. Each builds on the last, unlocking more frequencies and privileges. Pick the one you're studying for; you can switch any time. Guest mode works without an account, but saved progress starts only after you create one.

Technician
Entry level

Your first license, and your ticket to the air.

What you get

VHF/UHF privileges, local repeaters, satellite, ISS contacts, and some HF bands.

The exam

35 multiple-choice questions from a public pool. 26 correct to pass. Typically $15 fee.

General

More HF bands, more range, more modes.

What you get

Most HF privileges: SSB voice, digital modes, and worldwide contacts on 160 through 10 meters.

The exam

35 multiple-choice questions. 26 correct to pass. Must hold a Technician license first.

Amateur Extra

Full privileges on every amateur band.

What you get

Exclusive Extra-only sub-bands on HF, the freedom to operate anywhere amateurs are allowed.

The exam

50 multiple-choice questions. 37 correct to pass. Must hold a General license first.
